"Czanne" (Pronounced like the artist Cézanne)
April 15, 2001- October 15, 2003

Oldenburg gelding by Alla’ Czar out of Mariettaful (TB) by Sportful.

In a life that was too short, Czanne had already accomplished a great deal. His show highlights include:

• 2002 as a yearling he was RBYH at Showpark and Champion IHF West Coast Yearling Colt. With limited showing he finished last year 12th Nationally and 3rd Zone 8 in USAE Yearling Hunter Breeding.

•2003 Czanne campaigned a little more and has been first or second almost every time out. He has been BYH or RBYH 6 times. This is really quite an accomplishment as Czanne’s traveling partner is the 2 y/o filly that is leading the nation, so he is competing in very good company. Again this year he won IHF West Coast colts in his age group and he won the 2 y/o undersaddle class against a group of very nice horses. Czanne will be 4th Nationally and 3rd in Zone 8 in the 2 y/o Hunter Breeding Division for 2003.

All the horse showing aside the real horse Czanne was quite a character. He always wanted to be the center of attention, thus earning himself the barn name "Buggie". Basically, he bugged you unceasingly until you paid attention to him . He was quite the little ham for the photographers in the ring, seemingly knowing when you wanted a picture. If you knew this horse, you would know that he loved to work. I truly believe that he was happiest when he had something to do. For all his antics and playfulness, Buggie was a saint under saddle. One of my favorite memories of Buggie is at Showpark after IHF Regionals, when I decided that I wanted to hop on my two year old who had just won the hack. So with my friend and trainer Renae Coates , I took Czanne to the warm up ring. I have been on a horse maybe 10 times in the past 10 years. I am a true amateur. And there I was on my two year old, with amateurs dropping rails and ponies zooming around the ring. I knew to look at him, nobody would have thought that he was two and therefore would have not given another thought to getting too close or cutting me off. Czanne never thought twice about any of it and carted me around in the most saintly manner imaginable. I am so thankful I took the chance when I had it. Czanne was a very special horse in so many ways. I am so fortunate to have bred, raised and had the opportunity to show such a horse. Czanne’s Mother is back in foal to Alla’ Czar for a full sibling due this February, I hope that there is a little Czanne in there, hopefully to follow in his/her Brother’s hoof prints in the ring.

Czanne was a fighter and carried that spirit through his final ordeal. Czanne hit his head in what was nothing more than a very unfortunate accident. Czanne bravely fought for 24 hours, improving dramatically only to relapse again and finally fall into seizures. We humanly ended his life at 2 _ years old to the day. While it is sometimes easy to remember his death, remembering his life is more fitting, since he did seem to enjoy it so well.

I really want to thank everyone who has called, E-mailed or sent cards. Those messages of care and support have meant so much to me. When I looked back on what Czanne has given me, perhaps the most profound things aren’t the most tangible. The group of us, who have shown together all year…and yes, we are a rather competitive bunch, were the people who were there for me in every way imaginable during this ordeal. Sometimes it’s easy to loose sight of this. I have Buggie to thank for reminding me.
